Why is the fiscal year important for immigration?

On Behalf of | Aug 9, 2022 | Immigration Law

If you wish to come to the United States on a work visa, then you should understand the fiscal year and how it will impact your ability to get a visa.

The U.S. Department of State explains that the country has about 140,000. If you wish to get one of those documents, you need to know when the fiscal year begins and ends.

Fiscal year defined

The fiscal year is a term that defines a period of 12 months that may not run the standard calendar year. Typically, businesses and the government work off fiscal years as opposed to calendar years.

The U.S. government’s fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 1.

The importance

The reason you want to know about the fiscal year and the specific dates it runs is that the government releases the new visas at the start of the fiscal year. Demand will be very high in October, but it is also the time when the most visas are available. You should consider the fiscal year schedule when submitting your application.

Another point

One other thing to consider is that the government releases visas based on priority. This directly connects to the type of work you do. So, if you have a low-priority job, even if you apply right at the beginning of the fiscal year, you may still not get one of the available visas.

The immigration system can be difficult, but if you learn as much as possible about it, you can better understand how to navigate it.
