The completion of the naturalization test is an exciting step in your journey of becoming a citizen of the United States of America. Because it involves reading, writing and other skills, your preparation may take some time.

Knowing how to adequately plan for success can help you strategize your studying. Proactive and consistent practice can help you take control of your success.

Verify your eligibility

You will not have the approval to participate in the naturalization test until you have first met a series of requirements. According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, some of the requirements for eligibility include the following:

  • Proof of permanent residency
  • Ability to read, write and speak English
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Constitution
  • Show strong moral character

Once you have met all of the requirements, you can inquire about the next steps and begin prepping for the actual test.

Know what to expect

The naturalization test involves an assessment of your English skills. It also includes a civics portion where you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of concepts related to the country’s history and government. If you have personal needs or have a disability, you may request exemptions or modifications.

You can practice answering questions related to testing materials. Doing this repeatedly may help you feel confident about providing accurate answers when it is testing time. In the days leading up to your test, get ample rest, eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water. Once you have completed the test, you can expect correspondence notifying you of the outcome of your efforts.
