Managing stress when you’re worried about deportation

Living with the fear of deportation can take a serious toll on a person’s mental and physical well-being. In today’s political climate, it’s entirely understandable for immigrants and migrants—regardless of their immigration status—to feel anxious, uncertain and even frightened about the future.

The news cycle, policy changes and unpredictable enforcement actions have made it harder for many families to feel secure. With that said, if you or someone you love fears deportation, know that making the effort to manage this stress is not just potentially helpful—it’s necessary.

Your health and well-being matter

Constant fear can lead to chronic anxiety, depression, sleep problems and other health issues. It may affect your relationships, work performance and even your ability to make sound decisions. For example, fear of interacting with authorities may stop people from seeking legal guidance, medical help and public services, even when they are entitled to them. In the long run, this can cause avoidable harm.

The first step toward managing that fear is recognizing that you don’t have to do everything alone. Speaking with a qualified immigration legal team can provide you with clarity about your situation, your options and your rights. Knowing where you stand legally can often reduce the fear that comes from uncertainty. An attorney may also be able to help you apply for available protections, such as asylum, DACA renewal, U visas or other forms of relief.

Practicing self-care by maintaining routines, exercising, and spending time with loved ones can help ground you when things feel overwhelming. Know also that children often absorb the anxiety of their parents, even if they don’t fully understand the situation. If you have kids, having a plan in place—such as identifying a trusted adult who can care for your children in an emergency—can provide peace of mind.

Living in fear is not something anyone should have to accept. If you are concerned about your immigration status or potential enforcement actions, take steps to protect your legal rights and your health. You deserve greater peace of mind.
