How to approach naturalization & citizenship as an immigrant

On Behalf of | Dec 2, 2025 | Immigration Law

Becoming a citizen of a new country is a major milestone in any immigrant’s journey. In the United States, naturalization is the formal process that allows lawful permanent residents to become citizens after meeting certain eligibility requirements.

Approaching naturalization and citizenship thoughtfully is crucial. Below are key steps to guide you through the process.

1. Understand your eligibility

Before applying for naturalization, confirm that you meet the eligibility criteria under the Immigration and Nationality Act. Generally, you must have held lawful permanent resident status for at least five years or three years if married to a U.S. citizen.

Applicants must also be at least 18 years old, demonstrate continuous residence and physical presence in the U.S., and show good moral character. Military service members and their families may qualify under special provisions.

2. Prepare your application and documents

The next step involves completing the Application for Naturalization (Form N-400). Gather essential documents such as your green card, travel records, tax returns and any court or legal documents if applicable.

Attend the interview and take the tests

After submitting your application, you will be scheduled for a biometrics appointment and later for an interview with a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officer.

During this interview, you will take an English language and civics test, unless you qualify for an exemption based on age or disability. The test evaluates your understanding of U.S. history, government and civic principles.

Take the oath of allegiance

Once your application is approved, the final step is to attend a naturalization ceremony and take the Oath of Allegiance. This marks the official moment you become a U.S. citizen. Afterward, you will receive your Certificate of Naturalization and can apply for a U.S. passport.

Seek professional legal guidance

The naturalization process can vary depending on personal circumstances, prior travel history and residency status. Getting reliable legal guidance helps make sure that all requirements are met and that you complete the process smoothly, fully securing your place as a contributing member of your new nation.
